    Willa cries foul

Actress Willa Ford might want to insert a clause about flying pucks and other sporting perils into the vows she plans to exchange with Dallas Star Mike Modano.

At last weekend's Reebok Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game, local ESPN radio jock Ian Fitzsimmons hit a hard foul ball that made a beeline for Mike and Willa, who were watching from off the field at Frisco's Dr Pepper Ballpark. Demonstrating his lightning reflexes, Mike leapt out of the way, leaving his fiancée exposed in the target zone.

With the foul ball headed straight at Willa, commercial real estater Richard Barge jumped into the line of fire and kept the future Mrs. Modano from getting beaned.

"I still have two years left on my contract," explained Mr. Modano.

Center smoothes things with team after fiancée's criticisms

09:34 PM CDT on Monday, June 4, 2007

By MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News

Veteran Stars center Mike Modano said Monday that he has talked with organization officials recently about criticisms that his fiancée, entertainer Willa Ford, directed at the team's management and coaching staff in an Internet interview last month.

"I just wanted to clear some things up with them, and I think they had some concerns, too," Modano said. "They understand how I believe, and I believe we're moving in the right direction."

Among what Ford told ESPN.com: There was friction among the coaches; the team needed to acquire better wingers to play with Modano; and stripping him of the captaincy before last season was classless.

The interview took place a few weeks after the Stars were eliminated by Vancouver in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Mike Modano (left) will have to balance his relationships with Willa Ford and the Stars.

During the Stars' run, Ford was one of multiple celebrities asked to blog on NHL.com.

Modano said Ford based opinions expressed in the interview on some of his unfiltered frustration.

"It's tough, because my personality is that I'll hold a lot inside and then just go vent," said Modano, who will turn 37 on Thursday. "I think it's like anyone. You get it out of your system and then just go back to work."

Modano said he discussed the interview with general manager Doug Armstrong, coach Dave Tippett, associate coach Rick Wilson, a few teammates and ex-teammate Brett Hull, now a special assistant to team president Jim Lites.

Armstrong wouldn't comment on his conversation with Modano. Tippett said his door is open to any player at any time.

Modano said he needs to be more comfortable using that door.

"That's just not my personality, to speak out, and that's probably something I need to work on," he said. "But there are situations where I think all of the players could add their opinions, whether that's in what we're doing on the ice or if we're thinking about adding a player in free agency or a trade. I think the players' opinions are important there."

Modano is the only player who has been with the franchise since it moved from Minnesota in 1993. He became the career leader in regular-season goals among U.S.-born players last season and should become the American leader in career points next season.

He is signed through the 2009-10 season, has a no-trade clause and said he wants to play out the contract with the Stars.

"I feel great," he said. "I honestly think on a year-to-year basis right now. But, yeah, at this point, I want to play all three years."

  • Mike Komisarek

As it turns out, Pavano's not nearly the "player" the tabloids made him out to be. He wants the world to know he's very much in love with Lindsay Rosen, a restaurant marketing executive in Montreal, whom he met four years ago while pitching for the Expos. Sitting in his living room in West Palm Beach, Pavano flips open his iBook to show off pictures of her. Alongside Lindsay are shots of his parents, his two sisters, Joann and Michelle, his brothers-in-law and a handful of nieces and nephews.

These photos, Pavano says, testify to who he really is, a guy from a tight-knit Italian family, a kid who grew up hunting, skiing and snowmobiling in central Connecticut. His dad, Carmen, owns a dry cleaners in Bristol, Conn., where he takes care of some of ESPN's most famous suits. "He'd leave the house at 5 in the morning and come home after 6 at night," Carl says. "A real hard-working provider." His mom, Ann Marie, is a homemaker and part-time hairdresser who, as Carl puts it, "turns out five-star meals in 10 minutes." He calls his brothers-in-law, Tony and Sal, his two best friends in the world. He says once his new deal is signed, he'll buy a big piece of wooded property near his hometown so his entire family will have a place to gather and play.

The Bachelor? Right now, that's the last thing Pavano wants to be. "I guess it was flattering to be considered," he says. "But fact of the matter is, I'm not a bachelor, much less The Bachelor. I've got a girlfriend, and she's great." Pavano is acutely aware that his playboy image stems from those dates with Milano. "The worst decision I've ever made in my life," he says. "A mistake any young, single guy could make, but at the same time, I hurt someone deeply."

In short, he and Lindsay were going through a rough patch, a let's-see-other-people phase, when he was introduced to Milano at a party after the Marlins won the 2003 World Series in New York. Practically by the time the sun rose, a New York tab's gossip page was saying that Pavano and Milano looked like more than just friends. Their subsequent dates taught Pavano a lesson: partying like a TV star isn't all it's cracked up to be. As cameras clicked and entertainment reporters chattered, Pavano knew in his heart there was someone back in Montreal who loved him long before he outdueled Roger Clemens.

It was Lindsay who helped him focus and start to reach his potential back when he was pitching in front of vendors and the grounds crew at Olympic Stadium. And he wanted to be with her. He ended his relationship with Milano, and he's been trying to make things right with Lindsay ever since. Were this really The Bachelor, Pavano knows who'd get the final rose.

He clicks on another picture. Lindsay is thin and blonde, naturally pretty. No makeup. No posing. In the shot, she's cooking dinner for two in the apartment Carl rents in Montreal. "That's where I live in the winter," he says. "I also have a house north of the city. I love it there. I love the people, their substance. I feel very much at home there."
